Working independently as a crafter, selling products online or at
seasonal shows, can make accepting customer credit cards a
real challenge. Merchant services often include high fees for
businesses that do not handle a large number of transactions every
month, and these extra charges can make or break a small business.
However, there are some companies that specialize in credit card
processing when sales will be made only during a certain time of the
year – as with craftsmen and women who sell their handmade goods at
fairs, shows, and other seasonal events. With these specialty
contracts, entrepreneurs are not penalized during the months when no
transactions take place. These services are usually very affordable,
since the businesses have the opportunity to handle and personally
swipe their customers’ Visa and Master cards.

My favorite carousels as a child lived at Euclid Beach Park about eight miles West of Cleveland, Ohio.
Euclid Beach Park was built in 1895, and even in the 1950’s it had the feel of amusement parks from old movies. Cedar Point, which opened in 1870 in Sandusky, Ohio, still had some remnants of the original, and is the second-oldest amusement park in the country. After Disneyland opened in 1955, Cedar Point started to become a ‘modern’ park, with all the latest bells and whistles. Always fun, but not the same as Euclid Beach. A visit to Euclid Beach was like stepping into another time, with the best wooden roller coaster ever, a real ‘penny arcade’ (think Zoltar from the movie “Big,” ) and the most wonderful carousels. It was magical.

In the spring of 1985 after being unemployed for 18 months, we moved from
Jackson Center, Ohio to the small rural town of Dayton, Tennessee to start a
new job. We decided to start making country craft’s to supplement our income
and begin to pay back the mounding debt. I performed woodworking and Ann
picked up the paintbrush to do the artwork. We tried our hand at many
different items and even held a couple of open houses to display them.
With Christmas approaching, our daughter Shelly gave us a list as long as
our arm containing all the gifts she wanted for Christmas. However, we knew
we could not spend money that we did not have. We wanted to give her
something special that would last a long time, so I decided to build her
something. After much thought we came up with the idea of a rocking horse.

A R T C O L L E C T I N G:
I LEARNED MY FIRST valuable lesson about art collecting thirty years ago within weeks of being represented by a major gallery. As a collector myself, I now have an even deeper appreciation for that initial notable experience.
The owner was the quintessential “package” of collector par-excellence – professional in every way – and very devoted to his base of corporate and residential collectors. The second week I was in this exquisite venue, he asked me to deliver another round of paintings.

Can you imagine a smile as big as the sun when your child or grandchild sees the gift of a rocking horse on that special occasion? Boys and girls alike will take to this wood crafted work of art like a duck placed in water. Better yet, you can bet that this horse will follow your child wherever they choose to go in life. It is that important to them.
Think about the joy you had when there used to be mechanical horses to ride for a quarter in department stores or how your kids just naturally gravitate toward the carousel at the amusement park and jump on a horse. With the right tools and rocking horse plans, your child or grandchild will have hours of fun on their very own horse that was hand made especially for them.

Many people look for a vintage rocking horse when they decide to purchase a rocking horse. Some people are serious rocking horse collectors, and some people are attracted to the mystic and romance of an older rocking horse, while others are recapturing old memories.
Some people may be looking for a vintage rocking horse to give their grandchildren or children for a gift. In this case you must always make sure the horse you buy is safe to ride and not just looking good. Find this out by talking with the owner of the horse that you are thinking of purchasing before you make your purchase.

Whenever I think of rocking horses I immediately picture a classic spring mounted Victorian horse, but toy horses have been around for much long, dating back as far as the Egyptians.
The earliest English toy horses were not rockers, they had a round barrel body and were mounted on four wheels. If the child’s legs reached the floor they could propel themselves along. The children would mimic the jousting contests held during medieval times. Simple hobby horses, with stuffed heads mounted on a broomstick, were also popular for centuries.
