Holden’s Story and Childhood Cancer

Wendy Harless knew something was wrong with her two-year-old son. He kept complaining about his back hurting. Doctors told her that he was just fine, but they kept running tests on him. For three months, the process continued. She and her husband would take Holden in for a new test, they would bring him home and receive results that said nothing was wrong with him.

Finally, Wendy decided they needed a second opinion. She took him to Riley Hospital for Children, a Midwestern pediatrics hospital. He had an MRI test where they focused on his back, and found a spine tumor, about half the length of a pen. It was lodged in his spine, which had been causing his pain.

8 Common Challenges of SAHM Parenting

Many have the misconception that SAHM parenting is a bed of roses.  Boy do they ever have it wrong! Being a stay at home mom can be a real challenge. Dealing with the kids all day, cooking, and cleaning IS a job.  It may not pay the bills but it takes time, energy, and effort.  The following are 8 common challenges that stay at home moms face every day.

  • No breaks.  Working moms often get a 30 minute to an hour lunch break during the day to run errands or eat lunch. Stay at home moms, on the other hand, do not get breaks. One of the most common complaints from mothers who stay at home is that they get little or no time to themselves every day.
  • Lack of socialization. Moms who stay at home with their kids during the day also complain of a lack of socialization. It can be hard to get out and socialize when you have young children to take care of.  Many SAHM try to plan play dates to counteract the lack of socialization from staying at home all day with the kids.

Teaching Kids How to Fight Fair

“Communications” was a required course my freshman year in College.  I wish I had been given this course in elementary school!  It taught listening skills and the rules for fighting fair.  I had never heard of such a thing.  In my family, we just fought.  Anything that came to mind flung out of our mouths with the hope of hitting pay dirt.  Anything was game, we yelled, we slapped, we cried. It was brutal and I still ache from the wounds delivered there.

In my class, we watched movies of married couples fighting.  Some were loud but productive, some were quiet and cruel.  We learned it was as much content as delivery and that the goal was to communicate not “win”. We developed a list of effective tools and a list of destructive behaviors that has served me and my children for a lifetime.

chance to remember his innovative spirit and influence which extended deeply into the education space. Jobs contributed much to education—far beyond the Mac labs that continue to shape high school students. But beyond his iconic Apple products and memorable university commencement speeches, the enduring legacy that education could benefit from most was his ability to find greatness and innovation by not being unduly afraid of failure. Some of his greatest contributions to education weren’t seen as successes until far later. Some Steve Job Life Lessons for Education continued »
